When employees rant publicly

Have you ever thought about what your employees might be saying if or when they get miffed at you? Should this be something to worry about? Well, have you heard of employee rant websites?

I don't want to strike fear in the hearts of my employers reading this. Instead, I take the position that this could very well be a golden opportunity. As an employer, you can even set up a site yourself, where employees can anonymously rant! If the culture of the company is something that you're wanting to improve, this could be the vehicle to shift that momentum.

I was interviewed on this very topic a couple weeks ago. Apparently, the new rage is disgruntled employees going to websites to rant about their grievances against you and the company. In a quick search, you may easily find the NYPD rant website, Dell, and a waiter industry rant website. Some of the ranters, I'm sure, are still employed, while others may have left in a cloud of fumes or amidst controversy. The silver lining that these sites provide - a wealth of information that the employer probably didn't have!

For more information on this, check out Nancy's interview and a discussion of "rants" in the Austin American Statesman, Life and Arts section 12/16/08.

If you are an employer and would like to share your thoughts on this topic, please comment. Or, if you'd like some support to improve the culture of your company through executive coaching, team building, designing effective leadership, or creating emotional intelligence at work, contact us to schedule an interview to discuss how we can help you accomplish that and save money!

Wishing you Happy and Safe Holiday!
